1) Autumn Light
There’s a singular magic to autumn twilight when summer’s heat gives way to the fresh crispness of fall. Each atom of light dances slant across the world with a Midas touch .
Try this 30-minute noticing workout or this color-collecting walk to collect nature’s abundance.
2) Go See!
Friend, David Weber's beautiful exhibition of Birds in Flight is now at The Ragged Edge, 504 Bluff St., Cedar Falls.
3) New Exhibit
This season of showing my work continues. I'm so honored and overjoyed to join 18 other Iowa artists to commemorate the 60-year anniversary of the North American Review moving to Iowa. The Hearst Center for the Arts, 304 West Seerley Blvd, Cedar Falls, showcases the art included in the Fall 2024 Edition of NAR.
I think a lot of folks don't know that NAR is housed at the University of Northern Iowa. As the oldest literary magazine in the nation, NAR reflects the breadth of the American experience and encompasses voices committed to telling rich narratives that challenge the status quo.
NAR contributors include influential nineteenth-century American writers and thinkers such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Frederick Douglass, Edith Wharton, and Charlotte Perkins Gilman; and twentieth-century writers like William Carlos Williams, John Steinbeck, Thomas Wolfe, William Saroyan, and Flannery O’Connor.
It gives me chills to be in such good company. And I'm amazed at the quality and quantity of Iowa Artists showcased in this exhibit.
The show runs from Thursday, Sept. 26 through November 27.
4) Milk and Honey": Poetry and Chapbooks
Curious about chapbooks? Seth Thill, poet extraordinary, shares various paths to produce your own chapbooks. Because chapbooks go together with poetry like milk and honey, Seth's notes with poetry exercises are included. Enjoy!
5) Emily Stowe, You Rock
Emily Stowe is incredibly modest. The North American Review 60th Anniversary Show at The Hearst Center for the Arts is a MAJOR endeavor. I got just a tiny peak behind the scenes of Emily’s efforts. (Emily is the Managing Editor and Visual Art Editor for the North American Review. She is also the Founding Editor and publisher of the online Mag Pie magazine.)
For those who didn't, let me tell you, this would not have happened without Emily's imagination, cleverness, and hard work. I can’t over-state how amazing this collection is of Iowa Artists. Or what a marker this is in the storied history of one of the most culturally significant literary magazines in the United States.
We're incredibly fortunate to have NAR under her guidance and in our community. She belongs in the pantheon of the luminaries of NAR: Emerson, Thoreau, Kurt Vonnegut, and Joyce Carol-Oates.
So honored to be part of this collection.
The show is open at the Hearst Center for the Arts until Nov. 27. Go see it! Be amazed.
